If we have a look at instagram, we all know, that I finished this project five weeks ago. Why didn’t I published it already? Probably because I’m lazy and forgetful and didn’t took any good pictures of it…

Wenn man bei instagram schaut, dann weiß man, dass ich dieses Projekt bereits vor 5 Wochen fertig hatte. Warum ich bisher nicht darüber geschrieben habe? Weil ich faul und vergesslich bin und es bisher keine Bilder davon gab. Aber nun!

The base for this project was the classic IKEA step stool, named BEKVÄM (which translates to comfortable, by the way… Although he really isn’t THAT comfortable. But names for IKEA furniture is a whole other chapter – should I write something about that some day?).

Als Basis diente der klassische IKEA Tritthocker mit Namen BEKVÄM (was übersetzt übrigens genau das heißt, was man denkt: bequem… Obwohl er gar nicht wirklich bequem ist. Aber Namen für IKEA Möbel ist ein Thema für einen anderen Tag – soll ich dazu mal was erzählen?).

Essentially, an IKEA hack is a modification/

Okay, my hack is not that complicated; it’s just color. And it’s not nearly as awesome as the one, that Lauren recently posted (check it out!). But she calls me Ms. Furniture Transformation Queen, so we’re square! ;)
My hack is a modification and it looks so much better now, and I love it. And that’s well reason enough!

Okay, mein Hack ist jetzt nicht so kompliziert; es ist ja bloß Farbe auf Holz. Und es ist am Ende auch nicht so fantastisch wie das, was Lauren kürzlich zeigte (englischer Artikel). Aber sie nennt mich Ms. Furniture Transformation Queen, also sind wir quitt!
Mein Hack ist aber schon noch eine Modifikation und es sieht jetzt so viel besser aus in meiner Küche und ich mag es sehr. Und das ist dann auch schon Grund genug!

And my inspiration came from here, from Stacey and her blog Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy! (Although, I though about painting even before but she gave me the idea with the numbers … and then came also the stripes into my head!)

Und meine Inspiration habe ich von hier, von Stacey und ihrem Blog Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy! (Wobei, über’s streichen habe ich schon vorher nachgedacht. Aber sie gab mir die Idee mit den Zahlen … und dann kamen irgendwie auch die Streifen in meinen Kopf!)

I began one friday evening, really late (23:30)  with staining the top and the step, still having the stool in my kitchen. Yes, it was an amazing smell! But if a idea is stuck in my head and I have stain and a brush flying around in my kitchen… I just HAVE TO start. (Is there a cure for something like this? Hopefully not.)
Then, a day later, but still in my kitchen, I taped a stripe on both, step and top. I tried to have them straight in one line, it worked nearly, but good enough that you can’t tell the difference if you’re seeing it. I also created two small stencils with the numbers and fixed them with some painters tape. After the first stripe was dry, I taped the second stripe and painted that one as well. I used a varnish I already had at home and previously used in my bathroom. If I would do it again, I would use a varnish that isn’t high-gloss, but oh well… you know I just had to start and finish it quickly ;)
At last I painted all the legs white, with some usual acrylic paint that I had at home as well. With that white paint I also covered some of the parts that had been stained mistakenly.

Begonnen habe ich damit, die Stufe und die Oberseite zu beizen. Freitag Abends, spät, in meiner Küche, weil die Beize und ein Pinsel eh noch in der Küche rumflogen und die Idee nun mal in mein Kopf war. Ja, es roch hervorragend in meiner Küche!

Freitag Abend, 23:30 Uhr, ist doch die richtige Zeit, um mal eben den Küchenhocker zu beizen, ODER?

Ein oder zwei Tage später habe ich dann den ersten Streifen abgeklebt. Ich habe versucht, die beiden auf Oberseite und Stufe eine gerade Linie zu bringen, was zumindest so gut geklappt hat, dass es gerade aussieht, wenn man den Hocker anguckt. Außerdem hab ich dann noch die beiden kleinen Schablonen mit den Zahlen gebastelt und mit Malerkrepp festgeklebt. Nachdem der erste Streifen trocken war, habe ich den zweiten abgeklebt. Als Farbe habe ich einen Lack genommen, der auch noch hier zu Hause im Regal stand und der vorher meine Badezimmerschränke verschönern durfte. Wenn ich das noch mal machen würde, würde ich allerdings keinen hochglänzenden Lack mehr nutzen sondern eine matte Farbe. Aber so ist das nun mal, wenn man schnell anfangen und auch fertig werden will ;)
Als letztes habe ich dann all die Beine und übrigen Bretter weiß gestrichen und dabei auch die Stellen überstrichen, die versehentlich mitgebeizt wurden…
